At under 35 years old, Blanca González is the CEO of an excavation and drilling company. Despite her initial background in Audiology and experience in the care sector, she has found construction to be an industry full of opportunities—though not without its challenges for women.
How would you describe the current situation for women in the construction industry?
The sector remains heavily male-dominated, and women rarely apply for roles outside of administrative positions. In my experience, I have never received an application from a woman wanting to work with machinery or in other technical trades. Additionally, we still face prejudice—we are constantly tested to justify that we deserve our place in the industry.
How would you assess female participation in this field?
There is a major shortage of professionals in general—both men and women. However, the few women who are interested in the sector continue to face barriers. Often, men are not fully prepared for today’s industry standards, yet it is women who are expected to prove themselves repeatedly.
What do you think about the future of women in construction?
The sector offers many opportunities for women, but we need to perceive it as safe and attractive. If more women join, we could help address the current labour shortage. However, legislative and contractual adjustments are needed to make the industry more accessible.
What factors do you think would help integrate more women into construction?
Training is a major enabler. There are plenty of opportunities to learn and grow within the sector, particularly in emerging areas like renewable energy. It is also crucial to implement real gender equality policies that encourage women to train and work in construction.
And what are the main obstacles?
Current working conditions make recruitment difficult, especially with the removal of temporary contracts in a high-turnover industry. Salaries are not always seen as adequate given the physical demands of the job. Moreover, companies need to adapt to what younger generations are looking for today—more free time and greater flexibility.
What strategies or changes do you think are necessary to attract more women to the sector?
We need gender equality policies that are not just on paper but are genuinely enforced. It is also crucial to improve the perception of the industry, particularly by highlighting the opportunities offered by new technologies and green energy.
What skills or training do you think women need to succeed in construction?
Exactly the same as men. However, keeping up with digital and green skills is particularly important, as these are key areas for the future of the sector.
Construction must be an attractive sector for all of us. It is essential that we feel safe and understand that we have just as much right as men to take up space in this industry.
