The partners of the ‘Women Can Build LatAm’ project presented on 25 September, at the initiative’s closing event, the ‘Stories that Inspire‘ campaign, a series of nine video testimonials featuring women workers in the construction sector in Chile and Argentina.
The initiative arises in response to a persistent reality: only 11 % of people employed in construction are women, compared to 9 % in 2017. Although progress is evident, the growth is insufficient for a sector with high capacity for social and economic transformation.
The testimonials capture experiences from women working as electricians, bricklayers, plumbers and lorry drivers, demonstrating that “any trade is a woman’s trade”. The protagonists relate how construction has become an opportunity for professional reinvention and economic autonomy.
“Having this community, this network of women makes us stronger. Barriers are broken down, these are other realities that benefit us greatly”, highlights one of the testimonial contributors, who encourages other women: “To take the plunge, not to be afraid“.
The campaign, available on the project’s YouTube channel, forms part of a communication strategy that seeks to inspire young women, the unemployed and self-employed to consider construction as a viable professional option.
